March Lesson: Dragonfly Harness — Two Variations (Floor-Based)

Scope and intent: This lesson teaches two Dragonfly-style chest harness variations using 6mm Ogawa jute. Emphasis on symmetry, structure, and safe tension management. Floor-based only; no suspension.

Materials (Shibari Circus Standard)

  • 6mm Ogawa Jute, 8 m (26.3 ft)
  • Variation A: 2 ropes (optional 4 m for refinement)
  • Variation B: 3 ropes minimum (4 m recommended for reinforcement)
  • Trauma shears within reach
  • Mirror (optional for symmetry checks)
Reminder: These Dragonfly variations are decorative and structural chest harnesses. They are not suspension-rated unless reinforced and tested by experienced practitioners.

Safety (Read Before Tying)

  • Breathing: Maintain full chest expansion. No lines across throat.
  • Nerve awareness: Monitor brachial plexus (armpit area). Tingling or numbness requires immediate release.
  • Tension rule: Snug, not compressive. Two-finger space under primary wraps.
  • Time cap: 10–15 minutes per configuration for new practitioners.
  • Self-tie: Stay floor-based and keep knots accessible.

Variation A: Classic Dragonfly (Spine Emphasis)

A symmetrical chest harness with a defined central “thorax” and diagonal wing lines.

Concept

This version highlights visual symmetry. A stacked chest base anchors a vertical spine column, with diagonal “wings” expanding from sternum to back.

Step 1 — Chest Base

  1. Find the middle of the rope at the sternum.
  2. Create 2–3 horizontal wraps around the torso just under the armpits.
  3. Keep wraps parallel and level.

Step 2 — Define the Spine

  1. Bring both working ends to the back.
  2. Run them vertically along the spine.
  3. Add small frictions where the vertical lines cross the horizontal wraps.

Step 3 — Form the Wings

  1. Bring rope ends back to the front.
  2. Travel diagonally across the chest toward opposite sides.
  3. Return to the back and lock with a friction.

Step 4 — Finish

  • Tie off with secure half-hitches at the back or side.
  • Dress the rope flat and smooth.

Checks

  • Breathing unrestricted
  • Diagonal lines symmetrical
  • No rope digging into armpits

Variation B: Reinforced Dragonfly (Shoulder Integration)

An expanded Dragonfly harness incorporating shoulder pathways for greater structure.

Concept

This variation integrates shoulder lines and a reinforced spine column, creating stronger geometry and improved stability for transitions.

Step 1 — Repeat Chest Base

Build the same 2–3 wrap chest foundation as Variation A.

Step 2 — Shoulder Lines

  1. From the back, bring one working end up and over the shoulder.
  2. Return diagonally to the chest wrap.
  3. Lock with a friction.
  4. Repeat on the opposite side.

Placement: Shoulder lines sit outside the neck and never compress the throat.

Step 3 — Reinforce Spine Column

  1. Using a fresh rope, lay a vertical line down the spine.
  2. Capture the shoulder returns with clean frictions.
  3. Maintain even tension.

Step 4 — Wing Expansion

Add diagonal chest lines similar to Variation A, integrating them into the reinforced spine column.

Optional Lower Stabilization

  • Use a 4 m rope to wrap the lower ribcage.
  • Tie into the spine column to reduce migration.

Enhanced Checks

  • Shoulder mobility intact
  • No neck pressure
  • Symmetry maintained under gentle torso rotation

Comparison Practice

  • Build Variation A once slowly.
  • Untie and build Variation B.
  • Compare structural feel and symmetry.
  • Photograph front and back for alignment review.

Skill Progression

  • Dragonfly to Box Tie transition
  • Dragonfly integrated with hip harness
  • Advanced reinforcement concepts (with training)
